DTV stands for Digital Television, and is a digital way of transmitting television sounds and pictures in a computerised format. Transmitting sound and picture as computerised bits of information takes less bandwidth space in the airwaves, allowing room for more channels and additional features than the basic five channels list that people are used to with analogue television.
DTV is considered a lot better for various reasons, which is why analogue signals have been faded out over the years. It is very rare for a broadcast signal to be in analogue these days, especially after the Digital Switchover campaign which was launched to inform the public on a mass scale the need to change the way their television receives its signal - from analogue to digital.
So, what does DTV offer you? Well, the features of a Direct TV depend on the platform you choose to purchase to receive a digital broadcast (signal). There are several services that offer DTV - Digital Terrestrial, satellite, cable or broadband. These platforms offer different benefits of DTV, most of which are used as a selling point to gain customers. However, they all offer more channels than the standard five. In fact, they offer over 40 television channels.
DTV also offers you a better quality picture and sound. There is very little interference - no hiss or crackling of the programme being watched. You can also listen to radio with DTV. Again, the number of stations you get depends on the service you decide to go with, but generally, there will be at least 20 radio stations, including the mainstream ones, of course!
Now, besides the additional channels you receive with Digital TV, one of the main attractions is the interactivity that you get. This is a service where you can press a button on your television remote and get additional information on the programme you are viewing. This additional information ranges from quite mundane text for you to read, to games about the programme, behind the scenes, additional scenes, competitions and more. This additional service with Digital TVs is truly why there is no going back from digital!
If you are unsure on whether you have a digital service, you can find out simply by asking yourself one question - do I have more than five channels? If the answer is yes, then you are ready and have been receiving digital signals. If the answer is no, then you simply have to purchase a device that will enable you to receive digital signals. You can receive a digital signal by either purchasing a television that is DTV Enabled, or an external device like a Set-Top box to receive digital signals.
